Elena Griffing, Still Working 65 Years Later

Posted on Apr 26, 2011

Elena Griffing started working at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center 65 years ago – when Harry Truman was president, gasoline was 21 cents a gallon, the minimum wage was 40 cents an hour and you could buy a house in the Bay Area for less than $10,000.

Elena celebrated her 65th anniversary at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center on Monday. At 85, she remembered that when she was hired in 1946, administrator and nurse Alta Alice Miner Bates herself was still working at the community hospital she founded in 1905.

Today, Elena works four days a week as a Patient Relations Representative. She wears her impeccable starched white lab coat every day to honor Miss Bates.  “I saw her every day in her crisp white uniform and so admired her, I wanted to be just like her,” Elena said.

On Monday, about 100 employees, physicians and volunteers members celebrated Elena’s 65 years of service.
