Steve O’Brien, M.D., has accepted the appointment as Vice President of Medical Affairs at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center.
Dr. O’Brien is the medical director of the East Bay AIDS Center (EBAC) at Alta Bates Summit, a position he has held with distinction since 1998. He joined EBAC in 1995 and helped grow the center into the largest community hospital-based HIV program in the United States, serving more than 2,000 patients a year. EBAC’s current administration and leadership will continue to operate this amazing community service.
Most recently, Dr. O’Brien served as president of the Alta Bates medical staff and as a member of the Sutter Health East Bay Board of Directors. He played a critical role in ensuring that we received approval from the City of Oakland to build our new Patient Care Pavilion on the Summit Campus.
Prior to joining Alta Bates Summit, Dr. O’Brien was Assistant Clinical Professor of Medicine at The University of California, San Francisco, where he co-directed the HIV Managed Care program. He did his residency at UCSF’s Department of Internal Medicine. Steve received his medical degree from the University of Washington in Seattle in 1990, where he received undergraduate degrees in Zoology and Theater Arts in 1986.
