Summit Patient Care Pavilion “Tops Out”

Hundreds of physicians, employees and volunteers crowded on top of the Merritt garage Tuesday, Feb. 28, to sign the last beam before it was placed atop the new patient care pavilion at the Summit campus.

Hundreds signed the white beam before it was raised onto the skeleton of the 11-story building. The crowd watched and cheered the construction milestone while feasting on a barbecue lunch.

“Physicians and clinicians throughout the medical center partnered to contribute to the design of this pavilion,” said Dr. Steve O’Brien, vice president of medical affairs. “It’s where some of the best and the brightest people I know come to work every day. I look forward to the day when we will care for our patients here.”

The 250,000-square foot building is being built to exceed seismic safety standards.

“With this project, we’re doing much more than simply complying with the state’s seismic safety mandates,” said Chuck Prosper, CEO of Alta Bates Summit. “We’re making sure our medical center remains a leader in the delivery of innovative, world class health care.  The Patient Care Pavilion will become a beautiful state-of-the-art healing environment and a tremendous asset to the city of Oakland and the surrounding communities of the East Bay.”

The project, which began in August 2010, is about halfway completed and is expected to open in early 2014. Raising the final beam readies the building for the remainder of the work: electrical, walls, floors.

The structure was a unique challenge for architects and construction crews who had to figure out how to use just 1.5 acres in the middle of the campus to build the pavilion and connect it back to the existing hospital buildings on three sides and seven floors.

The $350 million patient pavilion and 1,000-space garage is funded through Sutter Health and Alta Bates Summit Medical Center and private and foundation donations. The garage is set to open in May.

Chuck Prosper Has Been Named Alta Bates Summit’s New CEO

Chuck Prosper has been named the new Chief Executive Officer of Alta Bates Summit Medical Center effective Monday, February 27.

Prosper has served as the medical center’s Chief Operating Officer since October, 2010. He will replace David Bradley, who will assume the position of president of the Sutter Health East Bay Region. Ed Berdick, the region’s first president, will become Senior Vice President for Shared Services at Sutter Health.

“I have great respect and admiration for the excellent care Alta Bates Summit provides to its community,” Prosper said last week.  “To be successful in the future, the medical center must find new ways to innovate in the delivery of care and to strengthen partnerships between physicians, employees and our community.  I look forward to the challenges ahead and honoring our mission.”

In a memo announcing the management changes, Sutter Health CEO Pat Fry said these changes ensure “a smooth transition of leadership in the East Bay.”

Prosper joined Alta Bates Summit as interim COO in October 2010. Previously, he was Chief Administrative Officer at (former Sutter-affiliated) Marin General Hospital where he had responsibility for all hospital operations and managed the transfer of the hospital from Sutter Health back to its health care district owner. Prosper earlier served as the Assistant Administrator for Ancillary and Support Services at the San Leandro Hospital Campus of Eden Medical Center.

Prosper holds a bachelor’s degree from Cornell University, a master’s degree in Physical Therapy from Columbia University and an MBA from the Haas School of Business at the University of California, Berkeley.  Prosper’s leadership experience and his personal knowledge of patient care are true assets to Alta Bates Summit.
