Alta Bates Summit Medical Center Honored for Quality Surgical Care
Posted on Nov 13, 2017
For the fourth consecutive year, Sutter Health’s Alta Bates Summit Medical Center has received the Meritorious Award from the American College of Surgeons National Surgical Quality Improvement Program (ACS NSQIP®). Alta Bates Summit is one of only 66 hospitals in the nation to achieve meritorious outcomes for surgical patient care.
“Alta Bates Summit is honored to once again receive this powerful, patient-centered distinction thanks to our multi-disciplinary teams of surgeons, anesthesiologists, nurses, clinicians and staff from infection control, quality, and compliance,” says Rose Calhan, Alta Bates Summit’s Chief Operating Officer. “This effort is an outstanding example of seamless teamwork led by our surgeons to enable exceptional patient care.”
The ACS NSQIP recognition program commends a select group of hospitals for achieving a meritorious composite score. That composite score was determined through a weighted formula combining eight outcomes. The outcome performances related to patient management were in the following eight clinical areas:
- Mortality
- Cardiac: cardiac arrest and myocardial infarction (heart attack)
- Pneumonia
- Unplanned Intubation
- Ventilator > 48 hours
- Renal Failure
- SSI: superficial incisional SSI, deep incisional SSI, and organ/space SSI
- UTI: urinary tract infection
As a participant, Alta Bates Summit was required to track the outcomes of inpatient and outpatient surgical procedures and collect data that directs patient safety and the quality of surgical care improvements. Our surgical case reviewer and the nurses in our Quality
Department ensure data accuracy and performance improvement efforts.
“This is an impressive accomplishment and is a testament to our talented medical staff and our entire surgery team at Alta Bates Summit Medical Center – once again proving that we offer the safest and highest quality care to our patients,” says Steve Stanten, M.D., Alta Bates Summit’s NSQIP surgeon champion. “Alta Bates Summit is one of only two Sutter Health hospitals to achieve this level of quality recognition.”
